Retail Sales Supervisors salary in the US

From the median paycheck to the top 10%, this page breaks down earnings for retail sales supervisors using American Community Survey records.

How much do retail sales supervisors earn?

Half of all retail sales supervisors in the United States earned more than $50,763 a year, and half earned less — almost exactly the $52,508 median for all US earners aged 25 and older. Only 73 of the 171 groups we track report a lower median, which puts it in the third quarter. The figures come from 124,356 survey records of people aged 25 and older with earnings in this occupation.

Retail Sales Supervisors: annual earnings thresholds (nationwide)
PositionAnnual earnings
Top 10% start at$125,891
Top 25% start at$79,431
Median (top 50%)$50,763
Bottom 25% earn below$32,218

How wide is the pay range?

The gap between the middle and the top is wide: the top tenth of retail sales supervisors earn at least $125,891, 2.5× the median, and the top quarter begins around $79,431. The bottom quarter earned under $32,218; that group includes people who worked part of the year or reduced hours, since every earner is counted. So the distance from the bottom quarter to the middle is a factor of 1.6.

Earnings by age

Mid-career workers out-earn new entrants, but not dramatically — the median goes from $44,078 (25–34) to $57,967 (45–54). After the peak, the 65+ group's median falls to $42,641 (26% lower), largely because more older workers cut back their hours.

Men and women

There is a 29% gap at the median: $59,879 for men and $42,771 for women. Women make up roughly 46% of the survey records here (an unweighted count, so treat it as approximate). Part of that difference reflects hours worked and job level within the occupation, which these totals don't control for.

Men$59,87967,126
Women$42,77157,230

Does education change the pay?

The education premium is steep: $92,281 at the median for workers with a doctorate against $44,747 for those with a high school education or less. The largest group in the sample has some college or an associate degree (45,922 records). Levels with fewer than 100 records are left out rather than estimated.

Where the most work, and what they earn there

Most of the sample comes from California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania, the five states where this occupation is most common in the data. Among them, California has the highest median at $54,998 and Florida the lowest at $48,881, a 13% spread. These are nominal dollars — living costs differ just as much between states and aren't adjusted for. 50 states have enough records (100+) for their own figure.

Similar pay doesn't mean similar work — training, hours and risk differ — but it's a useful reference when weighing a move.
